Owners Opt out of Labor Deal

NFL owners voted unanimously to opt out of the current CBA. if a deal isn't in place by 2009 the 2010 season will be played without a salary cap, with the possibility of the 2011 season not be played. Commisioner Roger Goddell has stated that a 17th regular season game in place of the fourth preaseason game to help solve future labor

Browns Do OK On Draft Day

Well despite having to trade to move up in the draft order partly because of trading draft positions last year to acquire QB Brady Quinn, the Browns did well with their initial five picks. Under the circumstances I thought the Browns had a surprisingly good draft.

Their top pick came in round four when they chose LB Beau Bell of UNLV. Bell was the 104th overall pick of the draft. He's been well scouted by the Browns and will be a welcome addition to the defense. Still in the fourth round the Browns grabbed tight end Marvin Rucker of Missouri. Current Browns starting tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. has suffered some major injuries in the past and there may also be some contract trouble looming in the future. Rucker is a good receiver and he will be a nice insurance policy for the Browns. Ahtyba Rubin was the Browns third choice in the sixth round. The nose guard from Iowa State is 6'3" - 320 pounds. He'll give the Browns depth on the defensive line and is considered a possible futu...

Milt Plum ; 1960 Was A "Plum" Good Year !

Milt Plum ; 1960 Was A "Plum" Good Year !

Dan Marino and Steve Young were recently inducted into the Football Hall
Of Fame in Canton, Ohio and deservingly so. Marino was probably the best
pure passer I've seen in my lifetime. He has set a multitude of passing
records that may never be broken. Mr. Young had a hard act to follow in San
Francisco when he took over for the beloved Joe Montana. To his credit using
class, poise, a rifle arm and the legs that many NFL running backs would
envy, he kept the 49ers among football's elite during his tenure as the
starter there.

What about some of the " Forgotten QB's " ? I was looking over the All
Time Passing Leaders ( Year by year ) chart in an issue of Football Digest.
The great Sammy Baugh was the first to break the 100% QB rating in 1945 with
an outstanding 109.9 rating. Charlie Conerly approached the record in 1959
by becoming the second QB to top 100% with a 102.7.

In 1960 a somewhat obscure QB ...

Playoff Preview

I Blog about Sports with a little of the rest of life thrown in I thought I'd put together my playoff previews and put them up here.

Titans at Chargers – The interesting side note to this game was set shortly after the first match up ended in week 14. Shawne Merriman accused Jeff Fisher of issuing a hit. He claimed that as a result of a blind side shot he took at Vince Young after he completed a hand off .Now that his Chargers will be facing those same Titans apparently he was just kidding? He has now done an about face saying he was just repeating something some teammates who weren’t playing had told him they saw on the other sideline. Everytime I he finds himself in the public eye, I find myself less impressed with him. The Biggest question mark in this game is will they go with Collins(Kerry not Todd, that’s the other Conference). I am pretty much breaking this down with Young in mind. It is just to risky to go Collins, yeah he has experience but a lot of that isn’t successful exper...

Black and Gold

What a way to bounce back from a slump: 7-2 and 1st in the division. Naysayers can say that the Steelers have a soft schedule, but they should really win those games first. By the looks of their play from the last 3 games (CIN, BAL, CLE), which were all division games, the Steelers know how to take care of business. The only thing is, the Pats seem to be having a monster season. But I like what I'm seeing from Coach Tomlin, he is smart and aggressive and is a perfect match for the Black and Gold. Roethlisberger has bounced back in a big way, and if not for Brady's "inhuman" performance, should be on top of the QB standings with 22 TDs and 7 INTs with still 7 games to go. Dec. 9 will be the litmus test vs. the Pats. I just hope they give a good fight.

2006 NFL Rules Changes

There are several new rules in the NFL in 2006. The NFL Competition Committee spends the early part of the offseason examining existing rules, and suggesting possible changes to the rules.

Rules changes are then voted upon by the teams at the NFL Annual Meeting in the spring. No matter what the changes, NFL players and coaches know they have to be cognizant of them.
“Our approach to the game is the same as it always is: to know the rules and to play within them,” says New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

New NFL rules for 2006:
• Down by contact calls may be reviewed by instant replay. Previously, a fumble was not reviewable if the ball carrier was ruled down by contact. If the ruling of down by contact is changed, the ball belongs to the recovering player at the spot of the recovery of the fumble.
Reason for the change: Provides a mechanism for correcting an obvious on-field officiating error.

• Each instant replay review will be a maximum of 60 seconds in length. Previously, i...

Here we go Steelers...Here we go!!

Well I highly doubt the Steelers will repeat their 15-1 performance from last year but they should finish 12-4 or as well as 13-3.

The core returns sans Plaxiglass Burress. I do believe however that losing Plaxico is a good thing. His attitude was detrimental to what the team was trying to do. Cedrick Wilson can be a fairly good #3 WR or even a #2( with Randle-El staying in the slot position where he is quite dangerous). Fred Gibson(6'4"), the 4th round pick out of Georgia could be a mirror image of Plaxico(6'5") minus the attitude. Heath Miller is a super-stud. This guy is the best tight end for Pittsburgh since Eric Green and may turn out to be the best ever. What a weapon for Roethlisberger. The only down point for the Steelers offense is the age of their running backs and lack of depth at offensive line. Look for big passing #'s from the, dare I say it, high-octane Steelers passing attack.

On defense, the Steelers made their smartest move in years in releasing Chad Scott. Th...
